The Housing Innovation Society was happy to present The new ways you can own a home - Sponsored by The Urban Advisory & AHHA.

Guest speakers from Muiwi, The Property Crowd, Build Together & Cornerstone Cohousing discussed some of the alternative forms of homeownership that exist, with topics ranging from crowd investment to cooperative living.

This kōrero was free and open to the public – the goal was to educate those seeking to become homeowners about the range of options that exist for ‘getting on the property ladder’. While everyone has different approaches to removing the barriers to property ownership, the speakers’ held a common belief – that equity and inclusion, need to play a larger role in our housing market. Topics ranged from accessible property shares to platforms that bring people together to collectively own, rent or build, to the ins and outs of establishing a cohousing group and going through the design and delivery process of a co-developed project. After the presentations a robust panel discussion followed, where people shared their views and asked challenging questions about whether housing should remain a commodity or should be a human right – a question we are grappling with, and will publish more about in the new year!

The night was a great success, and it was empowering to speak alongside other organisations that are leading the way in this space.
